The purpose of our camp is to change the lives of young people in the Watts community. Camps will be held quarterly so that campers have future camps to look forward to, without having to wait a length of times that seems “forever” to a young person. We will utilize sports to gain the attention of youth, their families, and additional stakeholders as we change the thinking of the entire community. Sports is a universal language, spoken by the majority of the youth within the Watts community, as well as their parents and other stakeholders. We see sports as an “ice breaker” to start conversation and address social concerns. We will assign tasks to campers between camps to keep their interests. Local professional sports teams represent all interests of camp participants. Professional players will address campers. Our camp will address social problems such as; hunger, financial literacy, physical fitness, career guidance, decision making, personal growth, and law enforcement interactions.
